Global recognition for DBS leadership program

World-class training for Deakin’s future academic leaders.

A program designed by Deakin Business School to prepare early-career academics for university leadership roles has been recognised by the world’s largest business education alliance.

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) today announced Deakin’s Future Academic Leaders Program (FALP) among the 30 winning finalists in the third Innovations That Inspire challenge.

The challenge recognises global institutions that champion innovation in leadership development and it examines three distinct areas of engagement: strengthening the understanding of effective leadership and leadership development; enhancing approaches to leadership education and development, and cultivating the business school leadership pipeline.

One of 119 innovations from 90 institutions across 25 countries, Deakin’s FALP was nominated under ‘cultivating the business school leadership pipeline’ category and boasts an integrated set of training and personal development initiatives for emerging academics.

The program is designed to help academic leaders understand the broader issues of the university and provide effective leadership training in the fast-changing institutional environment.

Delivered over an eight-month timeframe, it includes nine workshops, a personal assessment, active learning, senior staff shadowing, networking opportunities, one-on-one executive coaching, and attendance (where appropriate) at high-level university  governance meetings.

To date, there have been 60 participants in FALP which has gone on to produce a cohort of emerging leaders who are now prepared for the rigours of academic leadership.

Graduate outcomes from the program include a heightened awareness of personal leadership strengths and challenges, the ability to take on formal leadership roles and provide support for current leaders, and the capacity to influence peers and team members.
