"Deakin’s courses in sport are comprehensive and diverse".

Cricketers of the Indian Premier League’s Rising Pune Supergiants recently collaborated with Deakin University to promote sport education among students and educators in Bangalore – the heart of India’s growing technology and computing sector.

Supergiant players Ajinkya Rahane, Usman Khwaja, Locki Ferguson, Jayadev Unadkat, Shardul Thakur, and Faf Du Plesis joined Deakin University Professor David Shilbury at an event this week aimed at showcasing the importance of sport in education.

The event – attended by students and educators from across Bangalore – was an opportunity for young fans to engage with the cricket stars and for the cricketers to impart an important messages related to the key role of education – including how sport and education support and enhance each other.

That vital linkage between sport and education is highlighted by the current partnership between Deakin and the Rising Pune Supergiants. Deakin is a global leader in sport education, and is ranked number 1 in the world for sport science and in the global top 10 for sport management. The University’s unique partnership with the Supergiants has enabled the club to take advantage of Deakin’s sport science and sport business expertise, while also offering internship and study abroad opportunities for Deakin students.

The Rising Pune Supergiants share Deakin University’s strategic objectives of widening access to education and building opportunities in new areas like sports to make a difference to the communities it serves. It is this objective that prompted this week’s session with students, with Deakin joining the Supergiants on the road as they compete in the 2017 Indian Premier League.

Speaking at the event, Rising Pune Supergiant CEO Raghu Iyer said that his club’s partnership with Deakin ‘is a significant step towards enhancing the quality, not only in cricket, but across sports in India.

Through the association we aim to work towards research and learning both at academic and the industry levels. We are excited about the partnership and look forward to helping create ever-growing value in the years to come.

Speaking of this week’s event, Professor David Shilbury, Foundation Chair of Deakin’s Sport Management Program said, “Sport is a growing industry and with the increased focus on health and active lifestyles, the need for experts in this field has never been greater and there is a huge potential in India.
