Don’t miss out on the Indigenous Accounting and Business Conference. Last chance to register!
Deakin Business School (DBS) is pleased to announce its second Indigenous Accounting and Business Conference to be held on 26 – 27 October 2016 at Deakin’s iconic Geelong Waterfront campus.
The conference launched in 2015 and was established as a culturally inclusive forum to bring together business and finance leaders, researchers and policymakers, to consider the role business and financial skills can play in Indigenous success.
This year’s conference aims to provide an open forum where participants are able to raise awareness of cultural issues, and continue to address the underrepresentation of Indigenous individuals in business professions. Attending the conference provides an opportunity to further expand and cement knowledge of relevant Indigenous issues, and ensuring these issues continue to be included in the business agenda across the spectrum of business and finance companies, policy makers and the education sector.
Indigenous accountants who participated last year, reported that the tone of the discussion and moreover the inclusiveness and openness of the conference, made them feel as valued members of the accounting profession, and also provided them with validation that, as Indigenous people, they had chosen a profession that allows them to support their communities.
The conference will deliver a range of interesting sessions around the theme of ‘Cultural inclusion in business’, and includes a half-day visit to the highly commended Deakin University’s Institute of Koorie Education (IKE) with an address from its director Professor Liz Cameron. The Institute is a ground-breaking example of a community based learning model which involves a combination of both on-and off-campus teaching, designed to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to study without having to leave their communities for substantial periods of times, successfully enabling them to access higher education.
The main conference venue is the historical and beautiful Geelong Waterfront Campus, located in the heart of Geelong and one hour away from Melbourne. Originally built as wool stores in the 19th century, the buildings have been extensively renovated, creating a modern and vibrant campus with stunning views across the Corio Bay. Geelong itself is a lively city with a great art and cultural scene and plenty of leisure opportunities for visitors, as well as being conveniently placed to explore the coastal resorts around the Bellarine Peninsula, or unspoilt and secluded beaches around the world-renowned Great Ocean Road. Extending your stay after the conference could provide the perfect opportunity to explore these locations!
We hope you can join us for this two-day event, to take advantage of an excellent knowledge sharing and networking opportunity.
Tickets for the two-day conference are still available, but selling fast.
