Gaining international experience is not only a great opportunity for our students to bolster their resume, but also for our academics to broaden their teaching and research capacities.

Thus, Dr Sheila Nguyen, Director, Master of Business (Sport Management), recently joined a group of postgraduate sport management students at the San Diego Sports Consulting Project (SDSCP) in California, and upon conculsion continued her academic development in Houston.

She says that spending time overseas was not only a valuable experience from an academic perspective but also an eye-opener for students and very well received by participating sporting bodies.

‘It’s not often that you get a chance to use your existing business skills, as well as develop new ones, in an exciting and challenging sports business environment,’ she says.

Following the SDSPC, Dr Nguyen was invited to represent Australasian sport at the Green Sports Alliance Summit at Minute Maid Park – home of Major League Baseball's Houston Astros.

She says that the response to a global fireside chat as well as her efforts in the Australiasian sporting sector were well received.  

‘I was very proud to represent the good work that’s been done in our part of the world and the research that we're undertaking is showcasing the position and role Australia can play in this region in setting standards and benchmarks for Asia Pacific.

‘Such reactions cement the high-calibre of DBS sport management academics, and showcase our leadership in research and industry,’ she says.   

The summit also featured a number of global industry leaders, including Jonathan Smith, Golf Environment Organization (GEO, Scotland); Kattia Hernandez (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme); and Dominique Gobat (International Academy of Sport Science and Technology, AISTS).

The panel was moderated by Edgar Farrera (Circuit of the Americas, Austin, TX).
