Deakin University and Enterprise Geelong are pleased to offer Geelong business students the opportunity to gain practical and hands-on business experience through the Enterprise Geelong Tertiary Business Skills Program.
A number of business internships are available in the Geelong region in Trimester 2 allowing students to gain experience in a range of business disciplines.
Students will work (at least one day per week) in a business located in the Geelong region. A number of businesses will participate, offering experience in a range of disciplines relevant to the student's degree.
To be eligible to undertake these unpaid internship opportunities students must enrol in MIS390–Business Internship A (or MIS391–Business Internship B if this is their second internship).
To receive a certificate of completion, participants must attend the compulsory networking workshops as well as their weekly placement requirements.
Placements are to be negotiated according to the business requirements, however must be at least one day per week. If students have 12 credit points or more, and would like to obtain an expression of interest form, please email bl-wil@deakin.edu.au.
Are there any pre-requisites to joining the program?
The program is aimed at Deakin University students in Geelong who are completing their second year studies and beyond, as well as Cloud-based students who reside within the Geelong region. You will need to be eligible to enrol in MIS390 or MIS391.
How will the program operate?
Participants will be required to work in a local business (at least one day per week) for a minimum of 100 hours; as well as attend two compulsory workshops. These workshops will contribute to the accumulation of hours to satisfy the requirements of the internship unit.
Will students be assessed?
Yes. Once enrolled in MIS390 or MIS391 students will then be assessed in the usual manner for these units (see www.deakin.edu.au/buslaw/wil or the unit guide for more information).
Do students attend class?
No. In addition to the placements formal learning will occur via the compulsory workshops, with assessment via CloudDeakin.
Which courses can apply?
Students across each of the discipline areas in business and law are encouraged to complete an expression of interest form. Business participants are yet to be finalised, therefore the final opportunities will be directed to those students studying in the areas that businesses have requested.
What if the roles offered by businesses don't match the degree?
While every attempt will be made to place students, this can only occur where there is a corresponding business requirement. Lodging an expression of interest is no guarantee of selection or participation in the program. Unsuccessful students have the opportunity to register their details, to be advised of any future opportunities that may arise.
Do students need to attend an interview?
An interview process will be conducted by staff from both Enterprise Geelong and Deakin University. The application process will be finalised when students are matched with a corresponding business.
Will students receive guidance from Enterprise Geelong?
Yes, Enterprise Geelong will coordinate the business participants, and will facilitate networking workshops and provide additional resources to support the program.
