Deakin Educator Recognised with National Award.

Deakin University’s Dr William Yeoh has been awarded the ICT Educator of the Year Gold Award at the Australian Computer Society’s 2017 Digital Disruptors Awards ceremony - the ICT industry’s night of nights.

The national award recognises Dr Yeoh’s leadership in analytics education and his remarkable work in the analytics community over many years. Dr Yeoh is the co-founder of the Watson Analytics Global Academics Network (WAGAN) which promotes the development of high-value analytics skills for students via curriculum innovation, certification program, conference, students’ competition and shared teaching resource.

Director for IBM Centre of Excellence in Business Analytics at Deakin University, and also Director of International and Industry Engagement with the Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics, Dr Yeoh says he is both honoured and humbled to receive the prestigious award.

‘This is not only a fantastic acknowledgement of my contribution, but also for the tremendous support of Deakin’s industry partner IBM and for the wonderful work of the academics and students at Deakin’s Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics.’

He also acknowledges Professor Andy Koronios, former Head of School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences at University of South Australia.
‘Prof. Koronios assigned me to develop the first postgraduate subject in Business Intelligence at UniSA in 2008,’ he says.

Dr Yeoh is the two-time recipient of the internationally-competitive IBM Faculty Award (USD$30,000) which is rarely bestowed on Australian-based academics, and also the recipient of Deakin’s 2016 Vice Chancellor Award for Value Innovation.

In the same year, his mentored team was crowned World Champion at the 2016 IBM Watson Analytics Global Competition held in Las Vegas.

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) is the premier ICT professional association and the peak body representing Australia’s ICT sector.

The national ACS Digital Disruptors Awards were presented to honour the efforts of Australia’s brightest ICT talent and to showcase best of class of skills and service transformational projects by teams and organisations.
